What is compliance?
Regulatory compliance is described as the goal that organizations aspire to achieve in their efforts to ensure that they are aware of and take steps to comply with relevant laws and regulations.
Are we the police? Are we audit? Are we lawyers?
The Compliance Management Department (CMD) is an assurance provider similar to audit. It provides assurance to the governance structures on the level of compliance within an organization. We set up compliance processes, facilitates, and advises, trains, monitors and reports on compliance .We are also responsible for establishing a compliance culture in an organization.
We are not out to catch out business like the police, we are a business partner. We support business to achieve its targets whilst complying, not a side show after business is done.
Most compliance practitioners are legally qualified and you may call them “lawyers”. It is important for a compliance practitioner to read, understand and to interpret legislation so as to guide, advice and train business in that regard
What do we do?
The compliance department identifies legislation that applies to sefa and provide guidance and advice on compliance with legislation. As responsible parties, business units set up controls and implement controls in their environment.
Compliance will facilitate such controls’ identification and implementation and monitor the adequacy and effectiveness of such controls thereof.
Compliance reports to the governance structures to provide ongoing assurance on the level of compliance.
We will track and follow up on the findings of the monitoring exercises and emerging Bills and communicate to business. Business will provide comments on the effects of the legislation on their environments. Maintaining good relations with regulators is pivotal for us and sustain the relevance of our units at sefa. Equally the business buy- in is utmost to the compliance process.
